Skin Issue with a Doctors Note – Situation: Wrestler has a MHSAA skin form. The
form is dated December 15th for an office visit to the doctor. The box marked
communicable is checked. The date the wrestler may compete is filled in as
December 17th. What does the official do? The official is to always err on the
side of safety to the other contestants. The area in question is to be
inspected by the official (and trainer if present) and a determination made by
them. If any doubt as to a communicable disease, the official may overrule the
doctor’s note.
All officials please review the skin condition seminar below.

Stalling in the ultimate tiebreaker / :30 second ride out – Situation: As we
know per the national rulebook, stalling in the ultimate tiebreaker is called
differently than the rest of the match. It is the offensive wrestler’s
requirement to “Control” the bottom wrestler.
The situation about the offensive wrestler dropping to a leg or ankle is to
result in an immediate stalemate on the first offense and a stalling call on the
second. What does the official do if the bottom man stands and the top man stays
behind him content to “control” him and not attempting to return him to the mat?
Mark M to get an answer on the rear standing question.
Also, a suggestion will be made to national to better define Control.
Undershirt with multiple logos- Situation: wrestler reports with an Under Armor
type shirt with two logos on it. The rulebook says one logo is permitted. If
multiple small logos are on the shirt, have the wrestler turn it inside out and
is to be permitted to wrestle.
Easton Tilt / Cowboy – Situation: Top man is using the Easton to tilt the
bottom man and score back points. A nearfall has been earned and the bottom man
bellys out, the top man sitting on bottom’s hips is using one hand maintains a
grip on the bottom mans hand/wrist holding the hand/wrist and arm against
bottoms mans belly. The other hand is removed from the upper arm/elbow area and
raised to show the official the scoring maneuver has ended. Official then
awards back points, the top man again grabs the upper arm/elbow and again tilts
for additional back points. Ruling: Only ONE SET of back points can be earned
in this situation. The offensive wrestler must remove or reposition BOTH hands
for a second set of back points to be earned. We will demonstrate this further
at the AAAA February meeting.
Crowd Control: Situation – More and more parents are leaving the bleachers and
approaching the mat to film their childs match. It is not the official’s duty to
police the areas away from the mat. It is the host school / tournament directors
duty to maintain crowd control. Suggestions include going to the tournament
director and requesting his people keep the fans in the stands. Another was to
tell the tournament director that wrestling will be stopped until fans are in
the stands (not preferred to stop the event but can be done if excessive). Mark
Uyl also reminded us that it is the MHSAA’s policy that ALL filming is to be
done from the stands only.
Wrestler throws up - run injury time? – Situation: The wrestler throws up off
the mat during an out of bounds situation, doesn’t stop moving and immediately
walks back to the center of the mat ready to wrestle. Does the official run
injury time as the wrestler didn’t request it, there is no delay in the match,
and is ready to wrestle? Mark M to get an answer
Two-Man officiating System – A request by Ron Minoletti to obtain available
presentations on the two man officiating system. This topic will be presented
at the AAAA February meeting. All officials should take every opportunity they
can to work in the two man system for a better understanding and to improve
their skills.
Taco Bell – On the lighter side, one of the officials had mentioned that he was
officiating a match and heard the term “Taco Bell” and was curious what the
coach meant.
After an explanation from another official, it was the coaches signal to the
wrestler to “Run for the border” or get out of bounds. Pretty smart
